Bike Audio
This page covers information on how I installed an audio system on my particular bike. A 1997 FLSTS
- Sony Deck with 1G flash memory in face plate. Wired remote.
Deck Model# MEX1GP
Marine wired Remote Model # XM10B although the one I use is not marine and I have had it for years

I mounted the deck a little lower than I had wanted to as I had some difficulty getting clearance with the removable face plate. I might move it up an inch later. The bracket is one piece of longer 2" flat bar welded to a shorter piece at a slight angle. The sleeve for the stereo was wrapped in trunk lining around the sides and just a little on the back. I then riveted to the flat bar with a couple of washers to act as spacers in between. The wiring harness comes through a fairly large hole on the back. Since I was in there I added a 12 volt power source for a cell phone charger.
- 4" two way speakers set into custom made cans
I experimented with these and ended up making them longer for a better sound. They are constructed of paint cans. I welded two bolts to a bracket that is intended to go thought the existing windshield holes. It is held on with acorn nuts. The faces are plastic containers cut off and a hole cut in the middle for a speaker grill. They are sealed tight. Note: For asthetics I reversed all the windshield nuts.

- 8" Duel voice coil powered by rear speaker connections rather than a separate amp. This is set into a ABS plastic shroud pointing down in the rear bag and ported through bottom. I had previously reinforced the bag with ABS so it wouldn't bounce around. Shroud goes in first as it will flex and then speaker was screwed in.

I later cut a 4 inch piece of 8" sono tube to act as a speaker box. I also added some fibre fill under the speaker.

- Tap for speakers in helmet ( no longer used) I gave up on this even though it was the most efficient way to hear the sound. Problems included connecting helmet every time I mounted the bike. Also not being able to here sounds around me such as sirens until they were right on top of me.
